Should Your Agency Own Its Client Hosting?

Posted on November 4, 2026

Who controls your clients' hosting?

Most agencies end up with client hosting by accident. A client already had a GoDaddy account. A freelancer set up a server years ago. A host offered a reseller discount once and nobody looked at it again. Eventually the agency is supporting dozens of sites spread across hosts it didn’t choose and can’t fully control.

That works fine until something breaks.

The client calls you, not the host

When a client’s site goes down, they don’t call their host. They call you. Whatever happens next reflects on your agency, whether or not you control the server.

If the site sits on an account in the client’s name, or on a host where you’re one ticket in a queue, you’re accountable for an outcome you can’t directly fix. That’s where most agencies are, and it’s why “should we own our hosting?” is a business question, not a technical one.

What owning hosting actually means

It doesn’t mean running a data center or hiring a systems engineer. For an agency, owning hosting means three things.

The accounts are yours. Client sites live on accounts the agency controls, not on a client’s personal login or a former contractor’s account.

You know where everything is. For every site, you can say where it’s hosted, where DNS is managed, and who holds the registrar login. If you can’t answer that today, start there.

Someone technical has your back. When something goes wrong, a person who knows your setup answers. Not a generic support queue.

Why it’s worth doing

You keep the relationship. If you control the hosting, you’re the one who fixes the problem, and the client sees it. If you don’t, the best you can do is pass along updates from someone else.

Your care plans mean what they say. If you sell monthly care plans, your clients assume you’re responsible for the site staying up. Owning the hosting means the promise matches what you can actually deliver.

Leaving gets easier, not harder. When the accounts and logins are yours, you’re never stuck with a provider because untangling everything would take a month.

What gets in the way

The honest answer is the move. Moving client sites feels risky because they’re your clients’ sites, and if something goes wrong it’s your reputation. Plenty of agencies stay on a host they dislike because they don’t have the time to migrate safely.

That’s a fair concern, and it’s why we move sites for agencies at no cost, as standard practice. Raney Day Design moved 50+ sites to us from GoDaddy and Flywheel and has had zero downtime in the year since.

Where to start

You don’t have to move anything to get value from this. Start with an inventory:

  1. List every client site you support.
  2. For each one, write down the host, whose name the account is in, where DNS lives, and who has the registrar login.
  3. Mark every site where you couldn’t fix an outage yourself tonight.

That list shows you how much of your business sits on infrastructure you don’t control.

Talk it through

If you’re carrying client sites on hosting you’d rather not have to defend, book a call with Bobby. Bring the list, and we’ll tell you plainly whether moving makes sense.
